Spool Office & Spool Painter: Problems solutions

Sending fax through WinFax is not active with Windows XP.
SYMANTEC notifies that they have not updated and tested their Winfax SDK for XP, used to send fax automatically.

Check the ALA_TCP subsystem is properly active:

from a command line write WRKACTJOB and press ENTER.
The Clients connection with the AS/400 in TCP/IP is managed by the ALA_TCP subsystem
of the ALA_TCP library.
When this subsystem is activated the management of the active jobs must be the following:

The TCPSRVCTL job manages the requests of connection of the clients.
When a client calls for a connection, one of the two TCPRISP programs is activated and it passes from the DEQW status to the SELW status.
In the same time a new TCPRISP program is activated in DEQW status, it is ready to satisfy a new connection request.
The active jobs situation has always one TCPSRVCTL job and two TCPRISP jobs (DEQW status) and one TCPRISP job (SELW status), for every user connected.

  • If the subsystem is not active (it is not in the list of the active jobs):

    • Run the command: STRSBS ALA_TCP/ALA_TCP and check the right connection.

  • If the subsystem is active but in the list you do not see the TCPSRVCTL job:

      • Run the command: ENDSBS ALA_TCP *IMMED

      • Wait about a minute so as the TCP/IP can close the active connections (this process
goes on also after the subsystem being closed).

      • Run the command: STRSBS ALA_TCP/ALA_TCP

      • Check the right connection.

If activating the system again you still do not see the TCPSRVCTL among the active jobs, you have to repeat these operations increasing the waiting time between the command: ENDSBS and STRSBS.

If despite the waiting, when you active the subsystem the TCPSRVCTL job will not be active, the reason is that the TCP has not jet been able to complete the close down of a previous connection that broke.
To close manually the connection still active:

  • Run the command: NETSTAT.

  • Select the option: 3. TCP/IP connection status

  • Detect from the list the jobs that have: The column ind.Remoto different from *

  • Local socket equal to 16016 (or to the socket number you wrote when you configured the TCP/IP connection for Spool Office)

  • End the job with option 4=End

  • Close again the subsystem and then start it again (ENDSBS/STRSBS)

If you bought a Spool Office licence but not a Spool Painter licence check that there are no users codified as Spool Painter users.
If you find this condition (or if during the connection there are more Spool Office users than the
ones foreseen by the licence) the Server program cannot be activated and the Client cannot connect.
This condition occurs only after inserting the definitive password of the product: because during the trial period you can add an unlimited user number and the user MASTER is codified as Spool Painter user.
When you insert the definitive password you have to delete the users in excesscompared to the
licence. If you did not buy the Spool painter licence, you would call in changing the users codified as Spool Painter users, in this way the mark Spool Painter user is automatically deleted.
To do so:

  • Add the ALA_SPOOLn library in the library list.

  • Run the command SPOF to connect with the Spool Office menu.

  • Option 2. User and Robot management.

  • Select the users who have Y in the column "Spool Painter" with option 1=Management.

  • Press ENTER.

If what we told till now happens, and it is the first connection, probably during the Server installation you did not execute the step: CALL INSTALLA. This command set the right authority on the objects of the ALA_SPOOLn library.
In this case:

  • Connect with the AS/400 as users QSECOFR or as users with the same authority.

  • Add the ALA_SPOOLn library in the library list.

  • Run the command CALL INSTALLA

If what we told till now happens, and it is the first connection, it might be a Client
installation problem.
In this case contact us to check the installation.

If you changed the AS/400 IP address you have to:

  • Set the new IP address in the AS/400:

    • Connect with the AS/400 as user QSECOFR or as user with the same authority

    • Add the ALA_SPOOLn library in the library list.

    • Run the command SPOF.

    • Select from the menu displayed the option: T. Configuring TCP/IP

    • Select from the menu displayed the option: 1. Install

    • Write the new IP address in the screen displayed.

  • Set in all the clients the new IP address:

    • Run the program AS400Link.exe

    • Call the connection configuration and change the IP address.

By pressing the button "Connection" in the Client you get the message: User xxxxx has already an active session.

  1. If user has already an active session he cannot connect

  2. Is the client job broke off abruptly, in same cases the relevant server program is not able to detect the interruption in order to finish its job

In this case you have to break off the Server job, before being able to connect again.
To detect this job:

  • Run the command WRKACTJOB in the A/400

  • Select the jobs TCPRISP in status SELW executed in the subsystem ALA_TCP and add the option 5=Manag.

  • From the menu job management select the option: 14. Displaying files open, if active

  • Among the files open the server job is the one named Q9username.

After detecting the job, go to the previous screen (by pressing F12) where all the active jobs are listed, then delete the job:

  • Write 4 in the column Opz. of the job to delete.

  • Press F4.

  • Write *IMMED at the item "How to finish" and press ENTER.

By pressing the button "Connect " in the Client you get the following message: AS/400 password is not enabled.

This message means that the user who is connecting with the AS/400 (the one you wrote in the configuration program of the AS400Link connection) is in *DISABLED status.
To connect with the AS/400 it is necessary to change into *ENABLED the AS/400 user status:

  • Connect with the AS/400 as user QSECOFR or as user with the same authority.

  • Run the command WRKUSRPRF Username

  • Write the option 2 near the user to change

  • Write *ENABLED in the item Status and press Enter.

In the AS/400 you get an error message relevant to the file Q9username.
Ex: Member *FIRST, file Q9username in the library ALA_SPOOLn has not been found.

It might happen (rarely) that activating the Server program, in case of a previous abnormal closedown, you get an error message involving the file Q9username.
These files are created every time a client connects with and are deleted when the client disconnects it.
In these cases:

  • Delete the job in error by writing C to the messages.

  • Closedown the job in the Client.

  • In a command line write: DLTF ALA_SPOOLn/Q9username.

  • Connect with the Client program again.

On the PC there are not characters that are present in the AS/400  report (TCP/IP native connection).
Every time a character of the AS/400 report is sent to the PC, it should be converted through a characters  conversion table.
If an AS/400 character is not converted in the relevant PC character, (or if it is not converted properly), it is possible to updat the characters  conversion table:

  • Add the ALA_SPOOLn in the library list.

  • Run the SPOF command to connect to Spool Office menu.

  • Option T. Configuring TCP/IP

  • Option 4. Changing the character conversion table

  • Write the AS/400  character (i.e. [)

  • Write the ASCII relevant value
    (i.e.
    091) ASCII-0-127Character table   ASCII-128-255 -character Table

  • Press F20 to confirm.
